UV-Applications
Ultraviolet technology provides a wide range of treatments. It is widely used to disinfect water as well as treat other products and air. Using standardised and client specific systems, WEDECO offers solutions for drinking water, process water, cooling water, pure water, beverage water and wastewater, also special applications.
Drinking water.
Ensuring drinking water is safe is the major use of UV disinfection and this application continues to increase very rapidly, as is its use in beverage waters. In addition to use in municipal water supplies, especially since it has proven to be so effective in controlling cryptosporidium, it is also used on water supplies in ships and trains.

Wastewater.
To protect health and the environment there is an enormous growth in the use of UV disinfection following biological purification of wastewater. In many countries this process is prescribed by law. If wastewater is discharged into seas, rivers or lakes undisinfected, highly contagious microbiological pathogens endanger the health of swimmers and those playing water sports. Fish and shellfish also become heavily polluted – remember the fatalities and illnesses that have occurred following the consumption of contaminated shellfish.
Water for processes.
Industry requires clean, disinfected water for numerous processes. In the food and beverage industries, disinfected water is necessary for cleaning, rinsing, cooling and other areas of production. Full disinfected water is required for these and other applications in the pharmaceutical, electronic and other industries.
Special applications.
There are a number of applications where UV systems are used which have not been mentioned above. For example, fish farming requires extremely high standards of clean water. UV systems are also increasingly being used in the treatment of swimming pool water because UV destroys the harmful chlorine by-products, thus preventing unpleasant "chlorine" smells and tastes, also eye and skin irritations.
UV technology is also used to disinfect water in humidifiers, cooling water systems, medicine and recreational sports.
